Suraj Rao, a former software professional, has successfully developed a 1,000-square-foot vertical garden in Matadakani, Mangaluru, focused on cultivating spinach and basil. His journey from the IT sector to farming began in 2011 when career uncertainties prompted him to seek alternatives. Inspired by a talk emphasizing food, health, and education as stable industries, Rao explored sustainable farming methods.
Initially experimenting with biogas and composting, Rao discovered hydroponics through YouTuber "Geek Gardener" Manikandan, leading to his involvement in kitchen gardens in Bengaluru. Challenges like lack of interest among garden owners and the Covid-19 pandemic's impact shifted his focus to organic farming. Partnering with mushroom cultivator Shivakumar Kalladka, Rao combined hydroponics and organic methods to create vertical gardens.
Rao's innovative approach yields about 1100 pounds of spinach monthly, using just 80 gallons of water daily—40% less than traditional methods. Cocopeat and compost serve as natural manure. The duo markets their produce through the Local Farmer app and direct sales, offering fresh, healthy vegetables to consumers.
Their efforts emphasize sustainability and efficiency. "Organic farming requires more effort and is slightly costlier, but the health benefits and taste make it worthwhile," Rao shared. The venture also includes demand-driven basil cultivation, adding variety to their offerings.
