Port One Technology Park in Ipswich announced to be expanding with plans to create 3,500 jobs and boost the local economy by £3.4bn annually. A key highlight is the development of what they describe as 'the world's largest vertical farm'. Phase one will focus on strawberries, followed by vanilla and pharmaceutical crops.
The UK project integrates sustainability measures, including 50 hectares of solar panels generating 60 megawatts of power. A commercial electric truck parking facility will accelerate the shift from diesel to green transport. Additionally, an on-site concrete plant will use recycled materials, reducing carbon emissions by 80% during construction.
Beyond vertical farming, Port One will host manufacturing, a technology village for startups, a farm shop/cafe and permanent covered market with space for 50 local food produce traders who, in a bid to promote Suffolk's position as a leading food county, will be offered pitches at reduced rates; and much, much more. It also plans infrastructure improvements, including a multimillion-pound upgrade to local highways.
With its strategic location near Felixstowe Port, Port One aims to eliminate 70 million truck miles annually, reducing congestion and emissions. The expansion aligns with the UK's push for AI-driven industries, featuring a 1.2 million sq ft data village. Pending planning approval, the project is set to transform Suffolk into a hub for innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
