WKBN announced the winner of its Remarkable Women contest on Tuesday. The winner, Markisha Parker, received a $1,000 donation to the nonprofit organization of choice. She is eligible for consideration as the national "Woman of the Year." Finalists will gather in Hollywood Ca., for a celebration in April.
WKBN received nominations from those in the community and narrowed the contest down to a few finalists. One of Parker's nominators, Irish Finn, said Parker is very deserving of the award due to all of her hard work.
Parker founded Parker Farms, an urban farming initiative to provide fresh produce to families in need. She has turned urban spaces into thriving gardens and, through workshops and partnerships with food banks, she has made healthy, locally grown food accessible to those who need it.
Parker's mission started with a simple but powerful idea — to use farming to fight food insecurity. After moving back to the area in 2021, she took a class through Central State University — Fast Track Farming.
