Turks and Caicos Islands high school launches hydroponic garden

A new chapter in agricultural education has begun in the Turks and Caicos Islands, with the official opening of a hydroponics garden at A. Louise Garland Thomas High School in Providenciales.

The project, spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Cadet Corps, represents a significant step toward food security and youth development in the territory.

The garden, unveiled during a ceremony attended by the Honorable Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education and Culture, is part of the government's Community Gardens initiative aimed at promoting local food production and reducing dependence on imports.

"We import over $651,000 in lettuce alone every year. That's 2023 data. In 2024, that was almost $800,000," noted a representative from the Department of Agriculture during the opening. "That's $50,000 a month in lettuce alone."
