The Regional Food Bank unveiled its freight container-based farming system on Wednesday. The innovative concept allows the food bank to grow its own healthy vegetables year-round.
The container uses a hydroponic growing system, which helps grow nutrient-dense produce like kale, collards and arugula. The food is then delivered directly to local programs that help families in need.
"This is the freshest of the fresh. This morning, I was in here, I harvested some collards, and they will be in our distribution dock by this afternoon and maybe even in the hands of somebody who comes to a food pantry by this time tomorrow, definitely."
If you'd like to contribute to the food pantry, they're hosting a canned good food drive on April 26 at their distribution centers on Albany Shaker Road in Latham and State Route 416 in Montgomery.
