US (WY): Hands on learning for Sheridan County students

As you walked into the Sheridan County School District 2 Fifth Street greenhouse, Sheridan County youth explored the world of plants and worms through a collaboration with Rooted in Wyoming. The March 25 seed starting class was the first of 17 classes scheduled to take place — most of them being hosted at the school district 2 greenhouse — which will include about 600 elementary students, their teachers and volunteers.

Holy Name Catholic School students were the first visitors, participating in three learning stations that focused on soil types and where soils come from, worms and soil ecology and the hydroponic system at the Fifth Street greenhouse, which helps produce all the lettuce for the school meal programs, Rooted in Wyoming Program and Outreach Coordinator Ian Cannon-Wallace said.

Cannon-Wallace said the U.S. Department of Agriculture grant helped School District 2 refurbish its greenhouse, putting it into production to be used for educational purposes.

"That's definitely fulfilled by the horticulture classes here at Sheridan High School because they come into the greenhouse and learn all about hydroponics and controlled environment growing as well, but we're just so glad to be able to partner with the school district and bring groups from outside Sheridan County School District 2 into the greenhouse to learn," Cannon-Wallace said. "It's a community effort, teamwork and the funding from the federal government is essential for helping us be able to do all these programs and make good things happen."
