Reducing the need for multiple platforms

Fully integrating data systems within a vertical farm

One of greenhub solutions' most significant innovations is Green Farm OS, a connectivity platform designed to unify the fragmented technology infrastructure in vertical farming. "Today, every component in a vertical farm has its own software—the nutrient dosing unit, the lighting, the climate system—but there is no seamless way to connect and analyse all these data points together," Alexander Jaworski, CEO of greenhub solutions explains. "With Green Farm OS, we aim to integrate all these systems so that farm operators can optimize their operations based on comprehensive data insights." By what they choose to connect, they choose what data is relevant to them.

The company officially introduced Green Farm OS at the IPM trade fair earlier this year, where they gathered valuable feedback from industry professionals. "We launched it to start conversations with potential clients and partners, and to refine the product continuously. It's an ongoing development process—we don't have a complete solution for everything yet, but we are progressing step by step and mostly with our potential customers."

Connecting vertical farming through data
"The company greenhub initially started as a research group at Leipzig University, where we explored aquaculture, aquaponics, and hydroponics," he adds. "We initially had a broad focus, but over time, we realized that the need in indoor hydroponics provided the best opportunity for data-driven growing due to the sizable market and interest."

greenhub solutions, specializing in hydroponics and vertical farming technology, is based in Leipzig, Germany, the company is expanding its reach across Europe, collaborating with partners in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Southern Europe to enhance controlled-environment agriculture.

Rather than questioning vertical farming itself, we observe a recurring pattern in the business models of these large companies."

Yields and unit economics vary significantly from farm to farm and from publication to publication. With the goal of bringing transparency to viable business models, greenhub is focused on transferring research insights to the industry.

In its initial phase, greenhub has built a strong network with leading research institutions from both industry and academia. "We noticed that many researchers faced the same challenge we did—finding a reliable system that delivers accurate data for research purposes. If the data is unreliable due to sensor placement or other factors, the conclusions drawn can mislead the entire industry," he says.

greenhub solutions began developing plug-and-play hydroponic systems specifically tailored for research applications, supporting studies on crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, and even watermelon. These findings, combined with their integration into GreenFarm OS, now provide insights and transparent figures on which sustainable and scalable business models can be built.

Overcoming industry challenges
One of the key challenges greenhub solutions faces is integrating third-party climate control systems, which are often proprietary and difficult to access. "Climate computers from different companies can be very restrictive, and we are working on building API connections with HVAC system providers to enable better integration," he notes. "The industry as a whole would benefit from a more open, fully connected system.

Beyond technology, the adoption of vertical farming is still met with scepticism in some regions. "We are seeing that small business models with a direct distribution approach in vertical farming are becoming more viable compared to two or three years ago, but we still need to raise the tide for the entire industry. Understanding the full cultivation process and using reliable data to improve it is essential."

The future for vertical farming is data-driven
As greenhub solutions continues to refine its products, customer support remains a priority. "We have a dedicated team to assist clients and provide remote access to the system," Alexander says. "In controlled-environment agriculture, every day is crucial—losing time troubleshooting software issues can negatively impact yield and product quality. Our remote support ensures quick resolutions without requiring frequent on-site visits."

The company is focused on expanding its market presence while strengthening its core technology. "We see Leipzig as a great base for our operations—it's centrally located in Europe, making it easy to reach our key markets. For now, we are focusing on working with distribution partners in Europe."

For their customer base, they are looking for innovative growers who would like to take part in their pilot programme.
