£10m mushroom facility planned for UK

Walsh Mushrooms, one of the largest suppliers of fresh mushrooms across Ireland and the UK, is investing £10m (€12m) in a new growing facility in England. The Gorey, Co Wexford company announced the plans at the recent UK and Ireland business summit in Liverpool, hosted by British prime minister Keir Starmer and Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

The mushroom growing facility will be built near its distribution center in Evesham, Worcestershire. Alan Walsh, a director of Walsh Mushrooms, said the investment was a "major step forward" in modernizing and automating the company's production system.

He said the move was essential as "we see labor inflation and availability becoming ever more challenging".

"The investment will change the growing cycle and considerably reduce our energy cost per kilogram of mushrooms," he said.
