South Africa: A mushroom success story on the South Coast

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast, known for its rich agricultural landscape, has long been home to flourishing sugar cane, banana, macadamia nut, and coffee farms. Now, a forward-thinking entrepreneur is demonstrating the region's untapped potential for mushroom cultivation.

Oatlands Oyster Mushrooms, a fully black, female-owned business based in KwaNositha near Port Shepstone, has been supplying fresh oyster mushrooms to the local market since 2018.

The farm's continued success has paved the way for further investment, with plans to expand into growing king oyster mushrooms, tashik mushrooms, as well as yellow and blue oyster mushrooms in both fresh and dehydrated forms.
