A robot invention that sprays a fine mist of water and nutrients directly onto the roots

Founded in 2013 as CombaGroup SA, Swiss company CleanGreens Solutions has developed GREENOVA, an advanced soil-less cultivation technology designed to maximize efficiency and sustainability in food production. The CleanGreens team shares how their innovative aeroponics system is currently doing in the industry.

Doing irrigation differently with AEROponics
CleanGreens Solutions' innovation centers on AEROponics, a system that eliminates the need for soil by allowing plant roots to hang freely in the air. Unlike traditional hydroponics, which submerges roots in nutrient-rich water, CleanGreens' method utilizes an irrigation robot that discreetly operates beneath a mobile crop support structure.

"As the crop modules move, our irrigation robot sprays a fine mist of water and nutrients directly onto the roots," the team explains. "This minimizes microbiological risks and reduces the need for extensive nozzle maintenance. In short, we have made aeroponics more affordable and stable, bringing high-tech agriculture within reach of more growers."

"Our system drastically cuts water consumption by 96% compared to conventional field farming and reduces nutrient usage by 32% compared to hydroponics. Additionally, the technology enables a yield increase of up to 30 times, making it an attractive solution for both large-scale agricultural enterprises and smaller farming operations," they say.

Target markets and global expansion
Currently, CleanGreens Solutions is focusing on Europe and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where demand for indoor farming technologies is strong. "These regions have clear needs for controlled environment agriculture due to their climate and food security challenges," the team notes.

"We are also exploring opportunities in North America and Africa, though our activities there are still in the early stages."

The company has already installed and successfully implemented its system in diverse climates, including the extreme heat of the Kuwaiti desert.

"More and more growers are looking to technology to ensure stable yields," she says. "However, unlike before, return on investment (ROI) has become a critical factor in decision-making. The era of fast, uninformed investments is over. Now, potential customers thoroughly evaluate business models before committing to new agricultural systems."

To support informed decision-making, CleanGreens works closely with potential customers, helping them analyze their business needs, greenhouse construction plans, and crop selection strategies.

Why growers benefit
"Our technology ensures predictable and stable crop quality while delivering large-scale economic benefits," they emphasize. "This allows growers to achieve sustainability without sacrificing profitability."

One of the company's standout success stories comes from Les Crudettes in France. "With CleanGreens, we make a profit margin of 20% to 30% while offering fresh, local produce with zero pesticides," states a representative from Les Crudettes.

Beyond installation, the company provides ongoing agronomic consultations and greenhouse management support. "Some of our customers highly value this, especially those without prior farming experience," they add. "We don't just supply a system—we help growers succeed in the long run."
