Comparing the efficiency of nutritional formulas in aeroponically grown lettuce and sage

Vertical farming is considered one of the newest methods of cultivation in the greenhouse and is considered a part of urban agriculture, which can be referred to as the method of plant growing in greenhouses, skyscrapers or spaces that are vertically embedded in them.

Urban agriculture technology and vertical cultivation are common achievements of bio-friendly architecture and agriculture. The goals of urban agriculture, in addition to producing agricultural products to ensure food security, are to have a positive effect on the mental health of the community and friendship with nature. Since in our country of Iran, we are facing the phenomenon of drought and reduction of water resources, the use of vertical cultivation with the selection of suitable plants can play a significant role in promoting urban agriculture and biophilic wall coverings. In this research, the combined cultivation of three plants; savory, lettuce and sage were grown vertically on an aeroponic basis. The treatments used in this experiment include; two specialized hydroponic mediums of Smith and Papadopoulos were used to feed the above plants. After feeding with the mentioned nutrition solution and growing plants with traits such as; leaf area, leaf chlorophyll index, vegetative body dry weight, water use efficiency and crop yield in cultivation were measured for all three plants and essential oil yield parameters for two medicinal plants, sage and savory.

The results obtained from this research showed that the values of leaf area, greenness index, dry weight of vegetative body, crop yield and essential oil yield were significantly increased in Papadopoulos nutrient solution compared to Smith's nutrient solution.
