Portugal: Jerónimo Martins achieves 'record sales' in FY 2024 driven by Biedronka
Portuguese food distribution group Jerónimo Martins reported a 9.3% sales increase in full-year 2024, reaching €33.5bln, a new company record, while fourth-quarter turnover was up by 6.7%, to €8.7bln. Polish grocery retailer Biedronka remained the key driver of growth, contributing 70.4% to the group's total revenue with a 9.6% sales increase to €23.6bln.

New Zealand: Grocery prices rose 2.7% during 2024
Stats NZ spokesperson Nicola Growden said food price increases were partly offset by cheaper fruit and vegetables, down an annual 8%. "Fruit and vegetable prices were driven by lower prices for kūmara, potatoes, and onions", she said.

UK: Deliveroo is positive on 2024 earnings after 'robust' final quarter
Meal delivery company Deliveroo said it had "robust" growth in its final quarter, with gross sales on its platform up 7%, driven by more orders and increased spending. The British company said adjusted core earnings were expected to be towards the top end of its 110-130mln pound ($134-$159mln) range, adding that it would be free cash flow positive for the year, in line with its guidance.

Discounter Pepco says Poundland's sales fall worsened in Christmas quarter
European discounter Pepco Group said the performance of its struggling Poundland business in Britain deteriorated in the Christmas quarter, with underlying revenue falling 7.3%. The Warsaw-listed retailer, which also owns the Pepco and Dealz brands, said group like-for-like revenue fell 1.1% in the three months to December 31, its fiscal first quarter, narrowing from 3.5% in the prior quarter.

Italian cooperatives Unicoop Tirreno and Coop Centro Italia are merging to form Unicoop Etruria in a move that seeks to create a more competitive and influential force in the retail market in Central Italy. The merger process has been initiated with approval from both cooperatives' boards. Member meetings will be held in February to formally approve the changes. The new cooperative will have over 800,000 members and will be one of the largest in Italy.

Albertsons announces corporate layoffs
Albertsons has laid off workers in its corporate and division support workforce in an effort to lower expenses, a spokesperson for the grocer confirmed in an email to Grocery Dive. The company would not disclose the number of employees it laid off, or when it did so, but did state that "no store-level associates" were impacted. A company spokesperson told Boise Dev that Albertsons will transfer some of the roles to individuals in other countries.
