A Turkish packaging manufacturer has been focused on extending the shelf life of fresh produce through modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). According to Yagmur Ozbutun, Export Area Executive at Ser Pak Packaging, a Turkish packaging specialist, this significantly reduces spoilage: "We consider ourselves an innovative and agile company in the fresh produce and packaging industry. We specialize in Prolong®️ MAP Technology, which extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by using modified atmosphere packaging. Our goal is to optimize freshness, reduce spoilage, and ensure the sustainable and efficient handling of fresh produce throughout the entire supply chain."

Ser Pak has recently made an investment in solar energy to further reduce its carbon footprint. "As part of our broader sustainability strategy, we've invested in a solar energy system to meet our energy needs. This initiative reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and supporting environmentally responsible practices across our operations. Ser Pak also holds an BRCGS AA+ certification, ensuring our clients know exactly what to expect from us."
According to Ozbutun, the key to MAP is that the packaged product always remains in the ideal environment, helping to extend its shelf life. "Prolong MAP bags create the optimal atmosphere by combining the product's natural respiration with a controlled gas mixture. This balance of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and ethylene preserves freshness, inhibits pathogen growth, and extends the product's life. Our packaging allows controlled gas exchange, maintaining the correct levels of carbon dioxide, preventing oxygen depletion, and eliminating excessive odors. This ensures the product remains in an optimal environment."

Ozbutun continues: "Our Prolong technology absorbs ethylene gas, which is released by fresh produce after harvest. Ethylene accelerates ripening and aging, making products more susceptible to diseases. By removing ethylene, Prolong slows down the ripening process and extends freshness. This technology also regulates humidity, preventing excess moisture and fogging, ensuring the ideal conditions for storage and transportation."
Ozbutun explains that today's consumers expect their packaging to be as sustainable as possible. "The packaging market for fresh produce is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by evolving consumer demands for sustainable, convenient, and functional packaging solutions. We believe that brands integrating advanced technologies, sustainability practices, and consumer-focused design into their packaging will have a clear advantage in this increasingly competitive market."
For a Turkish packaging manufacturer, the current economic situation in Turkey presents significant challenges. However, Ozbutun says Ser Pak has navigated these difficulties effectively: "The current inflation in Turkey has had a major impact on our packaging business, affecting raw material costs, production expenses, consumer behavior, market dynamics, and supply chain operations. As a company, we must manage the rising costs of materials and production while meeting growing demands for sustainability, adhering to consumer expectations, and complying with regulatory requirements. To address these challenges, we focus on developing cost-effective packaging solutions, optimizing operational efficiency, and carefully managing price increases to avoid negatively affecting demand."

Ozbutun highlights that Ser Pak's packaging solutions are used across various continents. "Our packaging solutions are primarily exported to the United States, Mexico, the Balkans, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. We have established a strong presence in these regions, serving fresh product producers, retailers, packaging houses, and traders. These are our core markets, and we continue to expand our reach and strengthen our relationships."
"As part of our New Year strategy, we are focusing on international growth by establishing tailored agreements with major retail chains and fresh fruit and vegetable producers. Our goal is to help make healthier products more accessible in local markets. We are confident that our efforts will be further supported by our Smartlife and Relife brands, which will play a key role in driving our success in these markets. We are passionate about the potential and impact of modified atmosphere packaging for both B2B and B2C segments," Ozbutun concludes.
