Founded in 2017 by brothers Samuel and John Bertram, OnePointOne (OPO) is focused on organic indoor farming. Anna-Kate Bultema of OPO explains, "OPO was founded with the goal of using technology to grow food in a way that is not only efficient but sustainable and scalable."
They use vertical farming methods, utilizing automated hydroponic systems that allow for year-round, high-yield crop production. Anna-Kate elaborates, "We created vertical farming technology which enables us to deliver food and medicine to people on a global scale."
"Our ultimate mission is to tackle major global crises in health, nutrition, and medicine, aiming to grow food for 1.1 billion people. This vision has driven us to build a global network of vertical farms that can make a real difference," she stated.
Leafy greens and maybe mushrooms
Currently, OPO's technology is focused on producing leafy greens, microgreens, and herbs, but the company has plans for expansion. "We're already planning to broaden our crop range to include mushrooms and strawberries," Anna-Kate revealed. "We want to offer even more variety to our customers, ensuring that their farming systems are as versatile as they are efficient."
OPO sells its farming technology directly to farmers. However, the scope of their customer base is expanding. "We're seeing food distributors and retailers increasingly interested in owning their supply of fresh produce," she said. "They want to control the quality and consistency of the products they offer, which is exactly what OPO's technology allows them to do."
OPO supports sustainable project developers, retailers, and distributors who are looking to scale their businesses with higher yields and superior produce. "We're giving them the tools to build sustainable, efficient, and profitable growing operations," Anna-Kate added.
Moving to organic farming
One of the most exciting developments at OPO is the company's transition to organic farming. Anna-Kate explained, "Going organic was a natural next step for us. As we prepared to expand into retail in 2025, we recognized that our customers not only want great taste and nutrition but also the assurance that their food is grown responsibly."
Achieving organic certification is a big achievement for OPO. "We're committed to providing our customers with food that is not only nutritious but also grown to the highest environmental and ethical standards," Anna-Kate said.
Techniques on growing
"We utilize vertical-plane hydroponics, which allows us to grow crops in stacked columns that form walls of produce, making the most of limited space," she explained. It also ensures that crops receive consistent nutrient and water delivery.
Automation is another focus area for OPO. "Our primary automation efforts focus on efficient and reliable plant movement around the facility. We also optimize light and nutrients for plants at every stage of growth, reducing the need for human intervention and minimizing the risk of contamination."
Anna-Kate also highlighted OPO's ultra-high-density growing techniques. "By growing plants this way, we maximize crop production per square foot," she said.
A big year ahead
As Christmas approaches, the company is gearing up for significant expansion, which will increase its farm and production capacity. "We're focused on scaling up, which means more farms, more crops, and more opportunities to feed the world," Anna-Kate noted excitedly.
"We are planning to make our debut into retail with our consumer-facing brand, Willo," Anna-Kate shared. "This is a huge step forward for us as we move from being a B2B company to offering our high-quality organic produce directly to consumers."
"We have some big announcements coming, and we're thrilled to share them with our customers, investors, and the global community soon," Anna-Kate concluded.
