Van der Avoird Trayplant is active in the propagation of strawberry and raspberry plants for the European market. They consciously focus on sustainability and reliability, so that their customers reap the benefits. This starts at the basis, including the full automation of the sorting process by sorting robots in combination with the multifunctional plug Growcoon.
The company is committed to sustainability and reliability, both for the plant and for the staff. With millions of Growcoon plugs, the company will continue to optimize the propagation of raspberry propagation material in the coming year. By 2025, no less than 70% of the plants will be grown in the Growcoon. The big advantage that Van der Avoird Trayplant experienced in the pilot phase is that each plant is immediately a plug and automated handling can be done even better and faster.
Positively surprised
One of their customers, Van der Avoird Trayplant already took care of propagation in the Growcoon. This gave them their first experience with this biodegradable cutting and seeding plug. Better root regrowth after transplanting, more sustainable cultivation, and faster transplanting with less failure were the results.
"Because in the Growcoon every plant is a well-rooted plug, we can sort 100% automatically. That brings huge labor savings. More importantly, we think it allows us to employ our employees sustainably and offer them a pleasant working environment and better working conditions," says Jelle Broeders of Van der Avoird Trayplant. He continues: "From our sustainability ambition, we deliberately chose this plug holder because it is biodegradable, completely pfas-free and we can process it fully automatically."
Learning from other users
From sustainability ambitions, the company pays attention to its entire operations, aiming for the most sustainable product possible, an optimal process, and the best quality. "It succeeds in doing that with the Growcoon and it is super pleasing. This successful development is the result of thorough research and open innovation collaboration. By working together with each other and listening to the experiences of other users, you bring it all to an optimal result."
Product manager Raymond van Ispelen agrees. "Klasmann-Deilmann works with partners on the sustainable use of renewable raw materials. The cooperation with Maan Biobased Products results, among other things, in the Growcoon. The open net structure, perfect fit in the tray, and the grower and crop-specific adaptations are the answer to a repeated market demand. The Growcoon breaks down into C and H2O after the functional period. This is a TÜV-certified process."
The open net structure and the right fit in the tray also ensure that the plant can develop optimally and unhindered. Van Ispelen signals that the Growcoon has acquired a prominent role in raspberry plant propagation and propagation in recent years. "Precisely by also talking about the successes, you make sustainable innovation more widely known and work together towards successful cultivation and a positive image."
