US: Vote to happen soon on 1.5M-square-foot hydroponics facility

A vote is coming next week for a mammoth complex of hydroponic greenhouses to grow lettuce and salad greens in western Northampton County.

BrightFarms of Irvington New York has proposed four greenhouses totaling 1.5 million square feet to grow the greens on two parcels totaling 112 acres at the northeast corner of Locust and Arrowhead roads in East Allen Township. The property is owned by Jaindl Farms and the estate of Frederick Jaindl, according to the application to the township.

Plans also call for a 318,000-square-foot headhouse, an under-glass work area distinct from the large growing areas.

BrightFarms presented its plans at a conditional use hearing on Nov. 14, according to township manager Brent Green. A vote is anticipated by the supervisors' next meeting on Thursday, Dec. 12, Green said.
