South Korea: Ulsan City to allow vertical farms into industrial complexes

You can see the sight of growing agricultural products such as vegetables in the Ulsan industrial complex. Ulsan City announced on the 5th that it will reflect the permission to move into vertical farms, so-called plant factories, in the basic plan for general industrial complex management for the first time in the country.

The city plans to allow vertical farms to move into the unsold Gilcheon Industrial Complex in Ulju-gun to revitalize smart agriculture and solve the problem of unsold housing. Gilcheon Industrial Complex is an industrial complex created to attract automobile-related industries.

Vertical farms were difficult to install due to strict regulations on building in the case of farmland, and industrial complexes were not allowed to move in due to restrictions on resident industries such as manufacturing and knowledge industries. On the 12th of last month, the government revised the Enforcement Decree of the Industrial Cluster Act to allow industrial complexes to move in.

The food industry expected that operating vertical farms in the industrial complex would produce crops stably throughout the year and create synergy with other industries while manufacturing high-value-added processed foods at adjacent factories.
