Nonprofit organizations in Winnipeg are revamping cultivation methods to grow food. Siloam Mission, in collaboration with Trina Semenchuk, founder of Little Greenhouse That Could and a distributor for Harvest Today Canada, has begun growing fresh lettuce and herbs using the Harvest Wall, a vertical farming system designed by Harvest Today.
Trina, who is passionate about indoor growing and community-driven food solutions, initially connected with Siloam Mission by donating produce from one of her projects. After seeing the impact fresh, locally grown food had on their meal program, Siloam Mission became a customer, installing their own Harvest Wall to grow fresh greens year-round.
Trina played an integral role in helping Siloam Mission get set up with the Harvest Wall and ensuring the staff was trained to use the system efficiently. Her vision is to see Winnipeg embrace indoor vertical farming as a powerful tool for addressing food security.
"We are incredibly proud of Trina and the strides she is making in the vertical farming industry here in Manitoba," said William Aitken, Director of Operations for Harvest Today Canada. "Her passion for indoor growing and her commitment to improving food security for communities is truly inspiring, and we're honored to be part of this journey."
For Siloam Mission, which serves over 1,500 meals daily to people experiencing food insecurity in Winnipeg, the ability to grow their own high-quality food is monumental. "Our vertical farm has been a passion project for a long time. Now, seeing our community enjoy fresh, hearty meals like BLTs with homegrown lettuce is a dream come true," said Marilou Castro, Food Services Manager at Siloam Mission.
Kendall Giilck, an employee at Siloam Mission, emphasized the significance of this new food source, noting how it enhances the nutritional value of the meals provided. With over 80% of Siloam Mission's food being donated, the ability to grow fresh produce on-site greatly improves the quality and consistency of their offerings. This collaboration between Siloam Mission and Little Greenhouse That Could demonstrates the power of innovative solutions and community-driven efforts to improve food security for those who need it most.
