UK: Asda bolsters leadership team with new senior hires
Asda has announced the appointment of two new senior leaders with extensive retail and grocery experience to help drive its growth ambitions in 2025. Lauren Lepley joins in early December from Morrisons as Vice President Central Operations and Mark Henry will join in January from M&S as Vice President Retail South, with responsibility for Asda's southern store operations.

Germany: METRO grows by 3.8% in Q4 2023/24
METRO reported: "Positive sales growth in Q4 2023/24 driven by the consistent implementation of the sCore strategy. Sales growth in the guidance view (adjusted for currency and portfolio effects) of 3.8%; reported sales growth of 1.7% to €8.0bln (PY: €7.9bln). Continued growth in delivery business and in the online marketplace. FY 2023/24 sales growth of 5.9% in upper half of guidance range (3% to 7% compared to the previous year). Adjusted EBITDA change expected at the lower end of the guidance range (€-100mln to €50mln compared to the previous year)."

Romania: Competition council may ask Mega Image to sell some stores for Profi Rom food deal
Consiliul Concurenţei, the Romanian competition council, is likely to ask Mega Image to sell less than 100 stores in order to approve the acquisition of Profi Rom Food, according to media reports. Mega Image may need to sell stores where its network overlaps with Profi Rom Food, such as Bucharest, Cluj and Timisoara, online publication economedia.ro reported, citing Bogdan Chiriţoiu, president of the Consiliului Concurenţei.

Spanish supermarket chain Consum is confident of achieving a new record year in terms of sales and profits, driven by its growth strategy. The company expects sales to reach €4.6bln in its financial year 2024, surpassing the previous record of €4.4bln.

How does Czechia eat? A new survey paints an unhealthy picture
According to the survey, a significant number of Czechs consume too much meat and not enough vegetables. The recommended daily intake of vegetables is roughly 400 grams, but only a quarter of respondents eat vegetables every day, and half do so at most four times a week. Tomatoes, salad cucumber, peppers, and carrots are the most popular vegetables for lunch. "We have more than 1mln diabetics, which is more than 10% of the population. It is a problem that is alarming", Matyáš Fošum, director of the public health protection department of the Ministry of Health, said as part of the press release. "More than a third of people eat their lunch in less than twenty minutes. This is a very bad trend", warned Aneta Martišková, management member at Edenred.

US: Walmart continues growing its share of online grocery dollars
Online grocery sales had a good third quarter, but the majority of the growth again went to mass merchandisers like Walmart at the expense of traditional grocers, according to Brick Meets Click's Q3 report. The third quarter saw online grocery sales jump 13.8% to $27.4bln, with the biggest growth (25%) going to delivery orders, the U.S. eGrocery Market Share Report noted.

US: Kroger invests in North Texas with newest grocery store
Kroger's Dallas division recently opened its newest Kroger Marketplace store, in Melissa, Texas - the company's first new store in North Texas since 2019. The 123,000-square-foot store located at 2721 Sam Rayburn Highway represents an investment of $36mln in the community. The company says it is the first grocery store of its kind in the City of Melissa, providing access to more than 35,000 fresh, affordable products.
