Year-round strawberry farming in Turkmenistan

In Turkmenistan, strawberries are a year-round treat thanks to the country's warm climate.

Farmers in this Central Asian nation harvest strawberries multiple times throughout the year, including during the cooler autumn and winter months. Recently, a correspondent visited a greenhouse in Ashgabat to find out which variety of strawberries stands out for its taste and aroma.

Despite the end of summer, fresh strawberries are available in local markets, priced at about 5.0 euros.

Strawberries are cultivated just 10 kilometres from the capital, and greenhouse technology ensures stable conditions: 12°C (54°F) during growth and 24°C (75°F) when ripening.

The "Albion" variety is the most favoured in Turkmenistan. This variety is known for its large size and sweet flavour. Each day, over a ton of strawberries are harvested and sent to local markets as well as to Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
