Robert Carlson, co-founder of Grow Space Vertical Farms, has recently assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer. At the age of 17, Robert brings a new perspective and a strong commitment to sustainable agriculture, steering the company towards a more sustainable future.
A Journey Rooted in Passion and Innovation
Robert's interest in hydroponics and sustainable farming began during his freshman year at Badger High School in Lake Geneva, WI, where he enrolled in a class that introduced him to aquaponics and hydroponics. As someone already engaged in aquarium keeping, he quickly connected his hobby with the principles of hydroponic farming, leading to the creation of his second startup, The Fish Keepers, LLC. This venture combined a dropshipping aquarium supply business with a sustainable captive-bred fish operation.
His engagement with aquariums deepened his understanding of water chemistry, teaching him about the conditions necessary for aquatic life to thrive. This knowledge was foundational in starting a small water production operation at home, utilizing reverse osmosis and other technologies to create optimal water conditions, which was later applied to hydroponic farming.
A Family Endeavor
What started as a hobby between father and son evolved into a significant project. Together, they expanded from managing 20 aquariums to developing a fully automated hydroponic system at home. This system efficiently managed and recycled moisture, heat, and air, creating an ideal environment for growing a variety of plants with minimal water usage. This experience demonstrated the potential of indoor farming to address food challenges both locally and globally.
The broader opportunity was recognized, and the family transformed a former furniture store into a vertical farm with the support and mentorship of parents, Bob and Jane Carlson. Their hands-on involvement in the building and farming process added to the project's success, making it a community effort in Kenosha.
The Backbone of Our Success: Angela Carlson
Angela Carlson, the wife of one of the founders and Robert's mother, has played a crucial role in the success of Grow Space Vertical Farms. From the beginning, Angela has actively participated in the farm's operations, particularly in the planting and harvesting of lettuce crops, ensuring the produce remains fresh and available for the community. Her dedication to sustainable agriculture has been vital in maintaining the farm's momentum and success.
A Leader with a Vision
Robert Carlson's appointment as CEO was a strategic decision, aligning with his role as the chief visionary of the company. His leadership is seen as essential to advancing the vision of sustainable agriculture and the success of the vertical farm. Robert is committed to measuring the environmental impact of the farm, ensuring transparency, and partnering with local organizations to promote chemical-free, healthy, and sustainable agriculture.
A Path Toward True Sustainability
Robert envisions Grow Space Vertical Farms as a model for other communities, aiming to address local food challenges and make a positive environmental impact. Through strategies like limiting water usage and avoiding pesticides, the farm is a leader in the movement toward sustainability.
As the company embarks on this new chapter with Robert Carlson as CEO, it remains dedicated to its core values of sustainability, community, and health. Robert's leadership is about more than just producing food; it's about fostering a movement toward a future where fresh, nutritious food is accessible to all.
