A majority in the Dutch Lower House approves a possible ban on the use of temporary workers in business sectors with serious abuses, reports NOS. Social Affairs Minister Van Hijum (NSC) thinks this could be a "last resort" to improve the working conditions of cheap foreign temporary workers in slaughterhouses in particular. He announced his plan, which has caused a stir, this week.
In a parliamentary debate on labor migration, several parties asked Van Hijum how serious this measure is and when he plans to deploy it. The slaughterhouses have had enough time to sort it out, they think. "There are degrading conditions," said SP MP Van Kent. "You must intervene now."
