"Differentiation, quality, and creativity are in our DNA. Over the past months, we have been working relentlessly with our product development and agronomy team to craft the best tasting Pesto you can buy in the market. We have a lot of experience creating fresh Pesto sauces, but we wanted to show the world that it is also possible to create a shelf-stable," says Luca Travaglini, co-founder, and co-CEO of Planet Farms.
"Pesto, without compromising on taste or using additives. By combining our cleanest specialty basil and the innovative technology from Appennino Food Group we have found the perfect recipe for an amazing Pesto Line, 100% Italiano."
The Cirimido facility
Planet Farms will launch a new Pesto line under the Luca 1863 brand at the 2024 Summer Fancy Food show in New York later this week. Luca 1863 is a high-quality, premium Pesto brand rooted in Italian heritage. It represents the partnership between two leading Italian food technology companies: Planet Farms and Appennino Food Group. All ingredients are 100% Italian, with Planet Farms' basil as a star ingredient, alongside the best local and traceable ingredients.
Planet Farms will supply the basil from its new facility in Cirimido, Italy. This fully autonomous vertical farm of 20,000 m2 only uses 3 operators to manage and will be able to pack the basil automatically within 2 minutes after harvest. Next to producing the basil for the pesto, the facility can produce another 80,000 packs of salad each day.
The four new varieties
At launch, there will be 4 different varieties available: Basil & Truffle, Basil & Pumpkin, Basil & Tomato and Basil & Peperoncino.
The Pesto is 100% Italian; each of the SKUs is made, packed, and shipped from Italy. They are shelf stable and clean label (no acidifiers or preservatives). Each Pesto recipe is made with Planet Farms' one-of-a-kind Vertically Farmed Basil: expertly grown to ensure a bold and delicious flavor. The Pesto also features Parmigiano Reggiano DOP and fresh regional Italian ingredients: Pomodoro (Tomato) and Pumpkin from Emilia Romagna, Peperoncino from Calabria, and Truffle directly from Appennino Food Group.
Built like the masterpiece of an Italian architect, each recipe is a perfect balance of quality and refined ingredients.
