A group of students at All Saints All Grade, a K-12 school in the remote community of Grey River on the south coast, recently completed a community project that helps make healthful food more readily available to residents.
Grey River, about a two-hour ferry ride from Burgeo, operates on diesel-generated power.
Jonathan Morry, a teacher leading the project, says bringing in fresh fruit and vegetables leaves a sizeable carbon footprint. They received funding from a federal project that allowed them to address both climate change and the cost of living. The project consists of three hydroponic units.
Morry says they hope to get young people more interested in eating and growing healthful food. He says you can grow food indoors year-round, and they hope to give extras to the wider community. He also says the units are easy to maintain. They have begun growing things such as kale, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots and strawberries.
