The Green Roof Urban Farm is looking to expand its operations and is asking for the community's help — but that help won't go unrewarded.
Sabo says her farm is setting ambitious goals for 2024, including a new urban location and expensive equipment. The goals, which cost $250,000, are something the farm is asking for the community's help in achieving.
In an effort to secure the necessary funds, the farm is hosting the Sunflower Challenge — a pledge to plant a sunflower in the local community for every dollar donated. Brightening up the community isn't the only purpose of the sunflowers, however.
"In urban areas, especially where houses have been torn down, there's a lot of heavy metals in the soil, and that's toxic to our soil and our water," Sabo said. "Sunflowers specifically actually remove those toxins from the soil and they are specifically good pollinators for the bees."
