New York Sun Works awarded grant to support climate education

New York Sun Works has been awarded its first climate grant from CIV:LAB to support climate education and the science of sustainability programming at the organization's existing partner schools across the boroughs. It will also support the expansion of the organization's urban agriculture workforce development program at two high schools for students interested in climate-focused careers.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious CIV:LAB grant that recognizes our commitment to make climate education and workforce development programs accessible to thousands of our city’s young urban farmers,” said NY Sun Works Executive Director Manuela Zamora. “This investment will help bolster our efforts to enrich the science curriculum and create STEM career pathways by cultivating the new diverse generation of environmental innovators empowered to tackle the climate crisis in their neighborhoods and beyond.”

“The CIV:LAB Climate Fund is extremely proud to support NY Sun Works in its mission to bring hands-on environmental science education and green workforce readiness training to under-resourced public schools in New York City,” said CIV:LAB Executive Director Simon Sylvester-Chaudhuri.

CIV:LAB is an innovative grantmaking network that channels global funds and resources directly to local climate initiatives. CIV:LAB funding is distributed to organizations or initiatives in the climate technology, climate workforce development, and climate education spaces. Unrestricted grants between $10-$100k are given to New York City nonprofits/NGOs, community-based orgs, government programs, academic programs, and early-stage startups.

As of the 2022-2023 school year, the organization reached over 120,000 students in more than 300 schools across the city. NY Sun Works delivers year-round, inquiry-based K-12 science and sustainability education through the lens of urban farming. This new investment will help support the organization’s innovative curriculum, maintain the operation of state-of-the-art hydroponic farm classrooms and bring the CEA certification program to more high school students.
