Mienis Water installs 96 m3/h Ultrafiltration in Canada

That's one big Ultrafiltration solution

Mienis Water just installed the Ultrafiltration in Leamington, Canada. The 96 m3/h Ultrafiltration that Mienis Water installed is the biggest one in North America in the horticultural environment and will disinfect rain/pond water. "Since water scarcity is a big problem in the Leamington region, the client wanted to start safely using their rainwater. Ultrafiltration is a very uncommon technique in the region, but since other disinfection techniques would not be sufficient enough, it was not a hard choice to make. Especially in organic horticulture", says Jochum Genuit of Mienis Water.

He explains why he believes Ultrafiltration is the best water disinfection technique available. "The basis is simple; all other techniques focus on killing the infections, but the dead tissue stays behind. Ultrafiltration is a physical barrier that filters the infections out of the water and achieves much better disinfection rates. A good working UV or pasteurization unit can kill up to 99% of all infections. Mienis Water, with our UF membrane, filters 99,999999% of all bacteria out of the water and 99,999% of all viruses. The biggest advantage of this is that the dead tissue is removed from the water and, therefore, cannot function as food or a breeding ground for new infections. This is also why almost all of our clients choose to treat both their drain and incoming water sources. Especially if they are having virus problems in the tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers."

The installed Ultrafiltration from Mienis Water has multiple benefits. Since discharging water is an issue in the Leamington area, Mienis designed the system in a way that it would be able to run in a 100% closed loop, so without any wastewater.

Besides this, the system is also very energy efficient, with an energy consumption lower than 0.16 kW/m3. Furthermore, this is the only Ultrafiltration on the market that maintains itself. This raises the initial investment slightly, but these costs are being earned back on the operational costs relatively quickly, as Jochum explains.

Mienis Water is a membrane specialist. Jochem:" With more than 50 years, we are the oldest builder of Ultrafiltration systems for all types of water sources in horticulture. We have built a solid track record with our Reverse Osmosis and Ultrafiltration systems and are known for our reliable and robust solutions. If a problem arises with our system, we are available 24/7 with our worldwide support."
